Ascrea overlooks Lake Turano from a rocky spur at around 757 metres above sea level, on the slopes of Monte Navegna. Stone houses climb the mountainside, opening onto broad views of the lake, forests and peaks of the central Apennines.
The village preserves a medieval history documented from at least the thirteenth century. The Church of San Nicola, already recorded in 1252, remains one of its main historic and spiritual landmarks. The municipality also includes Stipes, a high-altitude hamlet associated with woodland, chestnut groves and forest produce.

History and identity
Ascrea, a village in the skyabove Lake Turano
Set halfway up the slopes of Monte Filone, Ascrea overlooks the Turano Valley and lake from above. Its origins lie between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries, when the older settlements of Bulgaretta and Mirandella were gradually abandoned.
The village was linked first to the lords of Collalto and later to the Mareri family. In the twentieth century, the creation of the artificial Lake Turano profoundly changed local life. Today Ascrea retains this identity among stone houses, panoramic viewpoints, woodland and trails towards Monte Navegna.
