History and identity
Ancient Asprawithin the walls of 1282
For centuries the place now called Casperia bore the name Aspra. Established as a free commune in 1189, it became one of Sabina’s most important communities between the 13th and 14th centuries. In 1282 the village raised a second circuit of walls that would permanently define its shape and entrances.
Those walls were not a backdrop: towers, wall walks, ravelins, arrow slits and controlled passages regulated the defence of the settlement. The statutes of 1397 protected the fortifications with extremely strict rules. Only in 1947 did Aspra take the name Casperia, placing a modern name upon a medieval plan still crossed exclusively on foot.
