The village was known as Castelvecchio until 1864, when it took its present name in reference to the ancient Sabine town of Tora. Its surroundings include Monte Antuni, the abandoned settlement linked to the shore by a narrow isthmus, and the hermitage of San Salvatore, perched high above Lake Turano.

Castel di Tora, an ancient villageon Lake Turano
Castel di Tora overlooks the north-eastern shore of Lake Turano with the compact outline of a medieval village built on rock. Until 1864 it was known as Castel Vecchio, or Castrum Vetus, a name recalling its ancient origins and a memory still alive among local residents.
The earliest documentary evidence dates to 1035, when the village appears in the Farfa records as Castrum Vetus de Ophiano. Its position along the valley between Carsoli and Rieti reflects a defensive role based on castles, towers and lookout points; today that history can be read in the stone lanes, viewpoints, Monte Antuni and the waters of the lake.
