History and identity
From the waters of Padulito the towers on the hills
The history of Colli sul Velino begins long before the present village. At the lakeside site of Paduli, archaeologists found traces of communities living between the Bronze Age and early Iron Age, with metalworking, wooden structures and objects carried through long-distance exchange networks.
In Roman times the plain contained a large villa traditionally connected with the senator Quintus Assius, where local accounts place Cicero in 54 BC. In the Middle Ages people moved to higher ground: towers and fortified settlements, probably also linked to families from Labro, controlled movement across the plain and offered better living conditions than the wetlands.
