History and identity
Under the signof San Salvatore Maggiore
Concerviano’s origins are intertwined with the Benedictine Abbey of San Salvatore Maggiore, founded in 735. Elevated to imperial status in the Carolingian period, it built a vast territorial lordship and a network of castles. Concerviano developed within this system of monastic power.
In 1282 the castle, together with other centres dependent on the abbey, passed under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Rieti. Concerviano still preserves its fortified layout with walls and towers. After a period as a hamlet of Rocca Sinibalda, it became an independent municipality in 1853.
