History and identity
From the castle of 1055to the Cesarini stronghold
Frasso appears in Farfa documents from the first half of the 10th century. The first certain record of the castle dates to 1055, when Alberto, son of Gibbone, donated it to Berardo I, abbot of Farfa. The fortified centre soon left monastic jurisdiction and later passed through the histories of the Brancaleoni, Savelli and Cesarini families.
In 1441 Frasso formed part of the dowry of Simodea Brancaleoni, wife of Orso Cesarini; disputes with the Savelli ended only in 1573. During the 16th century the Cesarini transformed the remains of the medieval stronghold into the castle still overlooking the village. After the 1673 marriage of Livia Cesarini and Federico Sforza, ownership passed to the Sforza Cesarini, who adapted the complex as a noble residence.
