Labro spreads in a fan shape across a hill 628 metres above sea level, between the Rieti Plain and the border with Umbria. Stone houses, lanes and stairways rise towards the castle, while the highest viewpoints reach Lago di Piediluco and, on the opposite side, the Terminillo mountains.
The documented history of the village goes back at least to 956 and remains visible in Porta Reatina, the walls, Castello Nobili Vitelleschi and the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. A long conservation effort has preserved the medieval structure, giving Labro one of the most recognisable silhouettes in northern Lazio.

History and identity
Labro, a fortified villagebetween lake and mountains
Labro appears in records in 956, when Otto I granted Aldobrandino de’ Nobili lordship over the castle and other centres between the Duchy of Spoleto and the county of Rieti. Its frontier position made the village a disputed and combative stronghold throughout the Middle Ages.
After the loss of the old fortress in the second half of the 15th century, Giordano de’ Nobili built a fortified palace against the surviving walls in the 16th century: today’s Castello Nobili Vitelleschi. During the 20th century, careful restoration preserved the village’s fan-shaped form, stone houses and unmistakable silhouette.
