History and identity
Licenza, the villageof Horace
Licenza stands in the Lucretili Mountains above the stream known in antiquity as the Digentia. This landscape of water, ridges, olive trees and silence connects the village with the memory of Quintus Horatius Flaccus, who received his celebrated Sabine estate from Maecenas between 33 and 32 BC.
During the Middle Ages the settlement gathered around the castle, later transformed into the Orsini-Borghese Baronial Palace. The Orsini and later the Borghese shaped the history of the fief. Today the village preserves this dual identity: a historic Lucretili village and a gateway to Horace’s Villa, the Horatian Civic Museum and the valley’s most evocative places.
