History and identity
Marcellina,between abbey and fortified settlements
Marcellina’s history is rooted in territory inhabited since the Roman period, where remains of villas, terraced structures and ancient materials reveal the continuity of an agricultural landscape at the foot of the Lucretili Mountains. During the Middle Ages several fortified settlements developed on the heights, including Castrum Marcellini, Castrum Montis Viridis and Castellaccio.
The centre of the present town is especially connected with Santa Maria in Monte Dominici, a monastery founded over earlier structures that became a religious, territorial and identity landmark. After the Marcellini, the fief passed to the Orsini, then the Cesi and finally the Borghese. Only in 1909 did Marcellina regain full municipal independence, preserving in its coat of arms the connection with the family that shaped its name and memory.
