Farfa Valley
Mompeo
Mompeo overlooks the Farfa Valley from a hill in the Sabine Mountains, with Orsini Naro Castle at the centre of the village and the Farfa Gorges below. Lanes, historic gardens and Roman traces accompany a place where the river landscape meets a surprisingly rich history.
Farfa Valley
Mompeobetween the castle and the Farfa Gorges
Mompeo gathers around Orsini Naro Castle, which dominates the historic centre and the valley. The village occupies a hill in the Sabine Mountains and overlooks one of Sabina’s most striking landscapes: the Farfa Gorges, where the river runs between woodland, rocky walls and old routes.
Yet Mompeo is more than its views. Historic gardens, frescoed rooms and traces of a long noble history remain in the village; lower down, an old road leads towards the Farfa, a bridge of Roman origin and the remains of the Naro mill. The village unites the story of the castle with that of the water, without separating the historic centre from the territory around it.

A castle over the valley and a river hidden in the woods
Mompeo changes character within a few kilometres. Above, the village is organised around Orsini Naro Castle and the monumental gateway commissioned by the Naro family; below, the Farfa runs through a wooded valley of gorges, old crossings and trails. The contrast makes the visit distinctive: stone and architecture in the centre, water and nature across the territory.
- Orsini Naro Castle, the great monumental presence in the upper village
- The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the heart of the historic centre
- The Farfa Gorges, where the landscape becomes wild among rock, woodland and water
- Porta dei Naro and the bridge over the Farfa, two different gateways to Mompeo’s history

History and identity
From Francone’s fortressto the castle of the Orsini and Naro families
From its origins, Mompeo’s history was connected with Farfa Abbey. In 875 Abbot Giovanni entrusted these lands to Francone, who built a castle on the hill where the village would grow. Over the following centuries the fief passed to several lords chosen by the abbey, until the arrival of the Orsini in the 12th century, who played a leading role in local history for generations.
In 1646 Mompeo was purchased by Marquis Bernardino Naro. The castle was transformed: Bernardino Raggi, connected with Bernini’s circle, redesigned the complex, while the main floor was enriched with 17th-century frescoes. After further changes of ownership, the municipality acquired the castle in 1995. It still dominates the village today, preserving the history of noble families and Mompeo’s cultural identity.
