Montasola preserves one of the most compact historic centres in the Sabine Mountains: an entirely pedestrian village built among arches, stairways, cobbles and brickwork that rise concentrically towards the fortress. At the entrance stands the great medieval tower, the only one of the sixteen that once protected the settlement still clearly visible.
The new settlement was founded on 11 August 1191, when Pope Celestine III gathered here the inhabitants of the ancient Curtis de Lauri. Today the route through the village links the Church of Saints Peter and Thomas, the precious Oratory of the Holy Crucifix, the fortress and nearby Parco Il Monte, a broad green terrace over Sabina.

History and identity
Montasola, from Curtis de Laurito the medieval city
The medieval village is traditionally dated to 11 August 1191, when Pope Celestine III promoted the reorganisation of the settlement and gathered here the inhabitants of ancient Curtis de Lauri. This origin also underlies Montasola’s memory as the “City of Laurels”.
The historic centre still preserves its medieval defensive logic: lanes and stairways climb towards the fortress, while the entrance tower recalls the system of sixteen towers that protected the settlement. In later centuries the village gained important artistic sites, including the Oratory of the Holy Crucifix, built between 1699 and 1708.
