For centuries the Tancia Valley was a strategic route between the Tiber Valley and the Rieti Plain. Fortifications and settlements developed along this passage; on the mountain remain the ruins of Rocca di Tancia, connected with the great medieval process of castle-building across Sabina.
The first record of the castle of Monte San Giovanni dates to 1240, when the complex passed to Napoleone Orsini. The village became an important point in the family’s estates and maintained deep connections with transhumance, trade and routes across the Tancia. The tower and fortified gate still preserve the memory of this long history.
