History and identity
From Marcetellito the Lucretili Mountains
The village was founded in the second half of the 16th century on the initiative of Cardinal Flavio Orsini, who moved a group of residents from Marcetelli, between the Turano and Salto valleys, to the Montefalco estate. According to local historical sources, they were promised farmland, pasture and tax relief; this connection gave rise to the new village named Monteflavio.
Before the present settlement, the main landmark was the medieval castle of Montefalco, founded in the 13th century and recorded as abandoned in 1422. Its ruins, reached on foot from the village, remain one of the territory’s strongest symbols.
