History and identity
From Sabine Trebulato the village of stone lions
Before the village there was Trebula Mutuesca, a centre of Sabine origin already active before Rome and later integrated into the Roman world. The territory still preserves traces of that town: ancient cults, inscriptions, sculptures and the amphitheatre, renovated in the imperial age under Trajan, reveal a place that held an important role in ancient Sabina.
Monteleone Sabino developed in the Middle Ages over the ruins of the ancient centre, reusing Roman stones and fragments in houses and walls. Over time the village passed through several families before entering the Papal States in the early 17th century. Even its name may preserve a connection with the past, probably recalling the many stone lions found in the territory, now among the most recognisable symbols of a village built over centuries of history.
