History and identity
Montenero Sabino,between Vacuna and the Orsini
Long before the medieval village, the territory of Montenero was already a place of worship. At Leone stood a Roman sanctuary dedicated to the Sabine goddess Vacuna, now the focus of archaeological campaigns revealing a large Republican building, mosaic floors and new evidence of ancient use.
Around the year 1000 the fortified settlement that shaped the village was founded. The castle began as a military outpost connected with Farfa, later passed to the Orsini and underwent noble transformations and changes of ownership. The village gathered along the ridge, following Via Roma between the fortress and the Church of San Cataldo.
