History and identity
From the lordship ofFarfa to the tower overlooking the valley
Montopoli’s territory preserves a history older than its medieval skyline: Villa dei Casoni and traces of the associated hydraulic system point to Roman settlement and earlier patterns of occupation. During the Middle Ages, however, Farfa Abbey decisively shaped the village. Around the year 1000, Abbot Ugo I built the tower at the highest point of the ridge, creating the valley’s great visual landmark.
Montopoli became one of the important castles of the Farfa lordship and followed the conflicts involving popes, emperors and major families. The village still preserves signs of that long period: Porta Romana, Palazzo degli Orsini, the square and the structure of the historic centre. In 1477 Cardinal Cosimo Orsini promulgated the final version of the Statuta Terrae Montisopoli, a document reflecting the community’s advanced organisation.
