History and identity
Between Farfa,Orsini and Borghese
Percile’s history developed along the ancient Via Licinese, which connected the Aniene basin with Sabina. Its origins are remote and partly mysterious: some interpretations derive the name from the Roman Porcia family, while finds including a funerary stone and a terracotta sarcophagus reveal settlement during the Roman period.
The medieval heart of the village is connected with Percile Castle and the territory’s long feudal history. Farfa documents record donations, confirmations and transfers of ownership; after the influence of Farfa Abbey, the fief passed to the Orsini, then to the Degli Atti family of Todi and finally to the Borghese in 1608.
Palazzo Borghese, now the town hall, preserves this memory. Created through the transformation of the old castle, it remains one of the village’s most recognisable symbols. Nearby, the Church of Santa Lucia and stone squares retain the identity of a community where history, daily life and the Lucretili landscape meet.
