Poggio Mirteto does not first appear as a compact village behind walls. The initial scene is Piazza Martiri della Libertà, a broad tree-lined urban space dominated by the Cathedral of the Assumption. It is the civic face of one of Sabina’s most important centres.
Cross Porta Farnese and the scale immediately changes. Beyond the arch begin the Borgo Vecchio, narrow lanes, the Clock Tower and the Bishop’s Palace with the Sabina Diocesan Museum. Outside the compact nucleus, the Church of San Paolo preserves frescoes and architecture reaching back to the medieval origins of the settlement.

History and identity
From the fortified villageto the diocesan town
The original nucleus of Poggio Mirteto took shape between the 13th and 14th centuries around a fortified system of castle, walls, gates and towers. The Clock Tower and the fabric of the Borgo Vecchio still preserve that structure, while Porta Farnese, opened in the 16th century, became one of the monumental entrances to the walled town.
Over the following centuries Poggio Mirteto gradually expanded beyond its old walls and assumed an increasingly central role in Sabina. It received the title of town in 1837; in 1841 Gregory XVI established the Diocese of Poggio Mirteto and Santa Maria Assunta became its cathedral. Since 1925 the see has been united with the suburbicarian Diocese of Sabina, explaining the importance of the Bishop’s Palace, Diocesan Museum and great square in the town’s present appearance.
