Central Sabina

Poggio Moianothe village of flowers, the Via Salaria and woodland

Poggio Moiano occupies a transitional position between the hills of Central Sabina and the northern Monti Lucretili. At 520 metres, the historic centre remains compact, but the visit quickly expands towards rural churches, Roman traces and wooded ravines.

The village’s personality comes precisely from this variety. San Martino reflects its connection with Farfa and reuses Roman stones; the Infiorata Museum preserves a living tradition; the Torracci return to the ancient Via Salaria, while Fosso della Mola reveals the territory’s most natural side.

On this page you can

  • Enter the historic centre and discover the Infiorata tradition, also presented in its dedicated museum
  • Follow the traces of Farfa and Roman times between San Martino, the Torracci and the ancient Via Salaria
  • Find your way through places to see, maccaruni, wild asparagus, hospitality and routes in the Monti Lucretili

At Poggio Moiano the visit does not remain inside the village: it begins in the lanes, passes through the Infiorata and reaches San Martino, the Torracci and the woodland of the Rio Romeano.

What to see

DiscoverPoggio Moiano

Between rural churches, floral art and Roman traces

Poggio Moiano combines very different places within a compact territory: the rural Church of San Martino reflects links with Farfa and the Roman world, the Infiorata Museum preserves a tradition that turns streets into floral images, and the Torracci carry the visit back to the ancient Via Salaria. Outside the centre, Fosso della Mola adds the village’s greenest and wildest landscape.

  • San Martino, a rural church with Roman friezes and 16th-century frescoes
  • The Infiorata Museum, dedicated to the village’s great floral tradition
  • The Torracci, Roman funerary monuments near Osteria Nuova
  • Fosso della Mola, among trails, woodland and the Rio Romeano waterfall

History and identity

From Meiana in the Farfa Registerto the Savelli and Borghese estates

The documented history of Poggio Moiano begins in 998, when the place appears in the Farfa Register as Meiana or Miana, together with a church dedicated to San Pietro. In the early 11th century part of the estate entered the sphere of Farfa Abbey; by 1262 the centre was already described as a castle, indicating an organised and fortified settlement.

After passing to the Anguillara, Poggio Moiano was connected with the Savelli through periods of redemption and confiscation until their final acquisition in 1503. In the 17th century the estate passed to the Borghese and later the Torlonia. This history re-emerges in the rural Church of San Martino, reused Roman stones and the Torracci returning local history to the ancient Via Salaria.
