Farfa Valley

Poggio Nativo

Poggio Nativo is a medieval village stretched along a rocky spur in the Farfa Valley. A 16th-century gateway introduces a historic centre arranged in a herringbone pattern, while Castello Savelli dominates the upper village. Across the territory, Battifratta Cave and the Santacittarama Buddhist monastery extend the story from prehistory to contemporary spirituality.

Farfa Valley

Poggio Nativoamong fortress, prehistory and spirituality

Poggio Nativo is immediately recognisable from its shape. The historic centre runs along a rocky spur and preserves a medieval herringbone layout: from the 16th-century gateway, lanes, steps and views climb towards the upper area dominated by Castello Savelli.

Yet the territory reaches far beyond the Middle Ages. Battifratta Cave takes the story back to prehistoric occupation of the valley, while the Convent of San Paolo preserves the village’s long religious presence. Just outside the centre, Santacittarama adds an unexpected element: a Theravada Buddhist monastery surrounded by the green Sabina countryside.

History and identity

From the prehistory of Battifrattato the castle of the Savelli family

Poggio Nativo’s history begins long before the medieval village. Battifratta Cave, along the Fosso di Riana, has produced evidence of prehistoric occupation. Centuries later, the settlement gathered on the safest part of the rocky spur, forming the fortified nucleus recorded in sources as Podium Donadei.

In the 15th century Poggio Nativo entered the history of the Savelli and experienced sieges, destruction and rebuilding. The castle, gateway and urban layout still recall that period. In 1633 the fief was sold to Marcantonio Borghese and remained with the family until the feudal order ended. Today the centre’s herringbone layout preserves traces of these passages, from the fortress to the 16th-century gateway.
