History and identity
A castellum above the streamand a fortress in the woods
Salisano’s medieval origins are connected with a castellum founded in the 11th century above the Fosso di Rasciano. The centre passed from the sphere of Farfa Abbey to the Orsini and later the Ferreolo; Via degli Archi and two circular towers still preserve traces of the old urban fabric.
A little lower down, the story continues among the remains of Rocca Baldesca. The fortified complex once housed a community and now survives through ruins and a watchtower surrounded by vegetation. Abandonment towards the end of the 16th century allowed the forest to reclaim what had once been inhabited and defended stone.
