History and identity
From the Via Salariato medieval strongholds
Before the castles there was the road. Torricella’s territory was crossed by the ancient Via Salaria, and Ponte Sambuco still preserves the power of this Roman infrastructure built from massive stone blocks.
During the Middle Ages the landscape filled with strongholds and fortified settlements. Ornaro Alto, documented from at least the 13th century, passed from the Brancaleone to the Orsini and later the Papal States. Centuries later, in 1867, Torricella welcomed Garibaldian volunteers heading towards Mentana; residents even offered hunting rifles.
