Tiber Valley

Torrita Tiberinathe balcony over the Tiber

Torrita Tiberina stands at the edge of the valley and looks down over the Tiber. The historic centre is organised around the Baronial Palace, the village’s former castle, while its churches add works of art, frescoes and medieval traces to the visit.

The story does not end within the village. From the viewpoint, the landscape descends towards the river reserve; nearby, Villa Baldacchini preserves the connection with a Roman site traditionally known as the Baths of Agrippina. Torrita thus brings together fortress, river and archaeology within a surprisingly compact area.

History and identity of Torrita Tiberina

History and identity

A fortressabove the Tiber

The position above the Tiber shaped Torrita’s history. In the Middle Ages the Savelli family transformed an earlier signal tower into a fortress with walls, a moat and a drawbridge. The Baronial Palace developed as a stronghold overlooking the valley before passing to the Orsini in the 15th century.

The territory also preserves a much older history. In the Villa Baldacchini area, Roman remains are traditionally associated with the Baths of Agrippina. In the 20th century Torrita added another chapter to its identity: the municipal cemetery contains the tombs of Aldo Moro and his wife Eleonora Chiavarelli.
