History and identity
From ancient Variato the Orsini
Vicovaro stands in the middle Aniene Valley along the ancient Via Tiburtina Valeria, in territory already inhabited during the pre-Roman period by the town of Varia, an Aequi stronghold later incorporated into the Roman history of the valley. Its position between the Aniene and the Lucretili Mountains made the village a natural point of passage and control between Rome, Tivoli and the Apennine interior.
During the Early Middle Ages the name Vicus Varius was connected with the Benedictine monastery of San Cosimato. In 1191 the territory passed to the Orsini, who made Vicovaro one of their earliest fiefs and strengthened its political and artistic role. This period produced the Charta Libertatis of 1273, palaces, churches and the celebrated Tempietto di San Giacomo Maggiore. The village later passed to the Bolognetti and Cenci-Bolognetti families, who left further marks on the historic centre.
